Except when it pertains to Israelis. Those are his words, words that have ramped up the despots in the Arab world and turned American Middle East policy 180 degrees. Gone are the days when Hamas and Hezbollah were viewed as terrorist organizations. Now, the lone democracy in the region is the demon.

It is a policy that welcomes the Holocaust denier, PLO Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to the White House and a photo op and relegates the Israeli prime minister to the backdoor and a seat in a conference room as Mr. Obama retires to the family residence for dinner. This backhand slap to Benjamin Netanyahu set the tone for Arab intransigence in the peace process and has ramped up the hostility. When Mr. Obama smacks a friend, what do the enemies of that friend think? 

Mr. Obama pledged during his campaign that Iran would never be allowed to gain a nuclear capability, but in the 18 months of his presidency he has done nothing to that end, but introduce ineffectual resolutions in the United Nations and threatened equally toothless sanctions.

We have learned that the Iranians are sending a ship to Gaza. What will Mr. Obama do? Will he again castigate the Israelis for interdicting the blockade runners? Will he again instruct the Israelis to board the ships without riot gear? Will he instruct the IDF to allow a ship that flies the flag of the great state sponsor of terrorism to be allowed free passage?
